What your letter includes
A proper ESA letter is a document from your provider, not a certificate or ID card. Landlords can verify it.
- Your provider's name, license type, license number and state
- Issue date and the provider's signature
- A statement that you have a disability-related need for your animal
- Provider contact details for landlord verification
What an ESA letter can and can't do
We’d rather you know the facts before you start.
- Support a reasonable accommodation request for housing, including "no pets" buildings
- Help you avoid pet deposits and pet rent where the Fair Housing Act applies
- Be verified by your landlord with your provider
- Let your animal fly in the cabin for free: most US airlines treat ESAs as regular pets
- Give public access like a service dog in stores or restaurants
- "Register" or "certify" your animal: no official ESA registry exists

Questions about ESA letters
Who can write an ESA letter?
A licensed mental health professional, such as a psychologist, licensed clinical social worker, licensed professional counselor or psychiatrist, who is licensed in the state where you live.
How long does it take?
It depends on your state and your provider’s availability. Some states, including California, require a client-provider relationship of at least 30 days before an ESA letter can be issued. We’ll tell you what applies to you before you pay.
What if I don't qualify?
Letters are only issued when a provider determines you have a qualifying need. [Your refund terms.]
Can my landlord refuse my ESA?
Under the Fair Housing Act, most housing providers must make reasonable accommodations, but there are exceptions, such as some owner-occupied buildings, and an animal can be refused if it poses a direct threat or causes significant damage. A letter supports your request; it doesn’t override every situation.
Do I need an ESA vest or ID tag?
No. Gear is optional and has no legal standing. Some owners like vests and tags so people recognize their animal. You can find them in our shop.
Is my information private?
Yes. Your answers are shared only with your evaluating provider. See our privacy policy for details.
Ready to see if you qualify?
The assessment takes a few minutes. You’ll know the next steps for your state before you pay.
